Dalmally Horse Shoe

The Dalmally Horse Shoe with Ben Cruachan breaking the sky line behind.
You could tell the rain was getting close by the time I took this.
Cruachan pump storage hydro power station is in the heart of Ben Cruachan. It draws water from Loch Awe, which is just out of sight in this image though the village of the same name can be seen large. It pumps Loch Awe sourced water to a mountain side reservoir using surplus grid energy and the process is reversed at times of high demand to stop the grid tripping out when everyone switches on their kettle. I think it can generate for 23 hours straight before the reservoir is empty. It must be one of the country’s largest rechargeable batteries. As with all the landscape around here you don’t have to look far to see high voltage transmission lines connecting Cruachan and other nearby schemes; Sloy and Shira. I started this ramble to justify the inclusion of the pylons in this shot.
Scotland’s apparent surplus of power did not stop us having another unexpected outage for much of this evening. Apparently much of the Highlands and Islands were in darkness.

Thank you very much for the kind comments on my picture yesterday taken at the road side on Rannoch Moor. I’m still tired.
