It's not Niagara!
Day 2 of the Lakes trip and the big group are doing a steep ascent up Helvellyn, whilst the two kids with injured knees, me, Hilary and Jude with Eddie the dog who doesn't like walking, took a stroll around Derwentwater. After an hour Freya was limping so she and Tom took the launch back to Keswick, with strict instructions to collect our sausage order. Tom spent much of the walk looking longingly towards the hills and wishing he was with his mates. up in the mountain.
The rest of us continued around the Lake, stopping at The Lodore Falls hotel for a drink and quick loo break.
I asked the barman how to get to the Falls. He looked bemused.
"Behind the hotel" he flapped his hand vaguely towards the back door, "somewhere over there I think".
'Haven't you seen them yourself."
"Yes, I did go out there once, but it's just a trickle. It's not Niagara."
We did find them, they are not Niagara, but still rather lovely.
We continued around the Lake until I suddenly realised that the soles were falling off both my approach shoes, and hopped on the launch back to Keswick where later they ended up in the hostel bin.
The teenagers arrived back exhausted after 9 hours walking which started with a steep ascent, so steep that the other Rachel reckoned they ascended 250 metres in just over 10 minutes. As it was their night to cook, they immediately raced into the kitchen, cooked 25 Cumbrian sausage swirls, made 10Kg of mashed potato, a huge pan of beans, peas, gravy, sticky toffee pudding and ice cream. Delicious. And they not only cooked it, but served it to us, washed up and scrubbed the catering kitchen. What a bunch of stars they are.
