The Dorset Arms (One of a series)

A George Batchelar an East Grinstead land owner announced, in May, 1756, that his son James Batchelar's "New Machine" would run every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from the George Inn, Haymarket, to East Grinstead, Lewes and Brighton, completing the journey in one day, returning on the other days of the week.

The establishment of a (relatively) fast coach journey was to establish the Dorset Arms as the main Coaching Inn in East Grinstead. You can still see the stables at the rear of the current building (Possibly because its a Grade II listed building).

There was always constant friction between a rival coach service operated by Messrs Tubb and Brawne who used the Crown.

Its even featured in a book The Dorset Arms a Ghostly Story although the reviews are very mixed.

Today its miss managed by Greene King and this might explain the variability of its food service if Trip Advisor is to be trusted
