St. Gregory's Minster

Although not far from home I have never visited this Saxon church. It was rebuilt in 1055 after marauding Danes destroyed the original. Over the door is an inscribed sundial which apparently is the oldest surviving inscription from Saxon times.

The interior walls have stone benches which were used by the old and infirm before pews were introduced. It is said that the expression 'Let the weakest go to the wall' dates back to these times.

I then abandoned Richard (injury form orienteering) and walked up Kirkdale. The primroses were definitely at their best and I spotted my first bluebell of the year. Jet enjoyed the walk after his short stay in kennels - lots of pent up energy to release!
