Leeds Castle...
Backblip
Woke refreshed and full of the joys after yesterday's lazy day. Also happy to see the sun shining again.
After another leisurely start to the day well that's what holidays are all about and bacon rolls for lunch, we got our acts together and headed to Leeds Castle, which was only about 20 minutes away. Well I say 20 minutes, it actually took us over an hour to get there as the road up to the castle was closed and a diversion was in place.
Well, the chaos that ensued as we attempted to follow this diversion will go down in family history as one of the most hilarious incidents ever!
A VERY large car, with a roof box, being diverted down tiny roads that were closed at the end and no place to turn along with almost killing a workman who happened to pop out from behind his work tent thinking he was safe as the road was closed allegedly, we saw no sign were two particular highlights.
After driving around for ages and discovering we were following another diversion (there were three different diversions on the go and each time we came to a diversion sign, we could't remember if we were meant to be following the circle, square of triangle!) we found ourselves back at the original road into the Castle and decided to go up it anyway, inspire of the road closed sign. Oh if only we'd done that an hour earlier we would have discovered the road was indeed closed.....but not until AFTER the entrance to the Castle. That would be why there were signs up saying CASTLE OPEN AS USUAL then?!!!
Anyhow, that aside, what a fantastic place to visit. So much to see, so much to do and blip opportunities everywhere you look! That and the Castle staff were so lovely. They looked after us very well ensuring we got the little mini bus to the Castle as we wanted to go round the castle before exploring the grounds.
Well, the interior of the Castle is magnificent and its history so interesting. Even Alan was enthralled! I took SO many photos and to my amazement, I am pleased with them all!
We bought bird food to feed the birds and I was grateful for it as one of the two Canada geese at the front door of the castle wasn't particularly friendly, so we were able to bribe him to stop him hissing! D's face was a picture though. He hates birds at the best of times, never mind aggressive ones. He was off like a two-bob rocket as soon as it started flapping and hissing, leaving me, Alan and Grandpa to smooth the ruffled feathers :-)))
Sadly we spent so much time in the Castle, we didn't have time to explore the grounds. Trisha (the Castle mini bus driver) came back to the Castle in her little mini bus to take us back to the main entrance. Turns out her daughter used to live in Scotland, about 15 minutes from our previous house. It's a small world. She dropped us off at the shop and recommended the locally made gooseberry gin so we bought some. Well it would have been rude not to.
Stopped for fish suppers on the way home. They were huge! More like whale suppers! Followed by a wee G&T, feet up and some relaxing telly watching.
