The Memorial Garden
The ground occupied by each of the twin towers of the former
World Trade Centre will remain uncovered forever as a memorial
to the terrible events of 9/11. Water now streams down all four sides
of where the foundations once were as if to cleanse the scene of the
evil which destroyed so many innocent lives. In the background
stands a tree now proudly in flower which survived all the carnage.
It is now seen as a symbol of the indestructible nature of the human
spirit. Only a minute before this image was captured the rose was
placed against the name engraved. The names of all who died on that
day, other than the terrorists responsible, are etched in the steel plaques
which fully surround each memorial. One name adds "and her unborn
child". Those words of the taking even of a life unlived aroused emotions
of despair and revulsion too hard to express. One can only hope that the
opportunity, accepted by more than 5000 people, to contribute suggestions
to the form that this memorial should take will bring them comfort in
their despair.
