April 28th 2009 - Me and a couple of boobies

I was woken up just before 6:30 am to go see the Darwin Centre and Lonesome George. It was too early to really appreciate the centre and we only got to see Lonesome George through some bushes but it was still pretty special and I got to get really close to a couple of giant tortoises – even touching one of them.

We were off to Tortuga Bay this morning and the beach was glorious. We sunbathed, played Frisbee, swam, looked at some of the birds and relaxed in this incredible environment. We had lunch back at Tintorera (a delicious fish in coconut sauce) and then headed back to the Hotel but having some lovely entertainment on the way from some of the wildlife.

I saw a sea lion standing up against a counter an thought it would be a funny picture but on the other side was a wealth of wildlife including pelicans, kingfishers and blue footed boobies all hanging around waiting for fish. We must have spent quarter of an hour or so watching the Boobies look cute, argue, eat fish (I got to feed one!) and just generally be cool. I had to have the blip as a photo of me and a couple of Boobies really didn’t I?

We sailed to just off Santa Fe and snorkelled. It was a lovely last snorkel of the trip with plenty of fish to see and even a couple of manta rays in the deeper water. The journey back to San Cristobal was fairly choppy and so it was a little bit of a relief to get back, where we were greeted by a huge flock of birds. We took a couple of group photos and headed back to Casa de Nelly.

We were told of the Swine Flu outbreak and so Mia and I headed to town for laundry, food shopping and to find out a little more information and whether it could affect flights home. We cooked Vegetarian Lasagne back at the flat and then headed out to Polos originallu and then onto Voqui. There was pool and drinks and lots of fun to round off a wonderful day. Tomorrow is our last full day on the Galapagos which is an absolute shame.
