The Five Gentlemen.

In 1838 a consortium of land holders out of Chicago collectively known as the Five Gentlemen founded their new enterprise Darlington Terrain Concerns (named for the dearly departed sixth member of their circle) in the unsettled northwest sector of the state on the Smoke River. Incorporating the township in an attempt to attract the county seat, their settlement was first called Terrain City and thereafter merely shortened to Rain City. As a unique local climate condition caused it to storm one hundred days of the year, the name was considered appropriate.
