A Chilterns Calvary

This was taken outside Holy Trinity Church, in Penn Street. Each year they put these crosses up at Easter, just outside the churchyard. The church itself is surrounded by the ancient woodlands of Penn Wood, a good example of the beech forests that used to cover so much of this part of Buckinghamshire.

It brought to mind rather poignantly the words of the hymn I used to sing as a child, both at school and at church: 'There is a green hill far away...'
