Anne's Daily Encounters

Margraten

A few miles out from Maastricht is Margraten , a WW II cemetry of the Americans and it is one of their largest fields of honour in Europe; it's been 50 years since I visited it, then with my parents. Good to see that relatives from the dead still come to bring flowers to the graves of them WW II fighters. And I find it crazy that the world all over wars raged and rage ever since these lads were laid down; still no consensus on the issue Live and Let Live?!

April and May are the months during which WW II is commemorated in the media here more often than in other months, May 7th 1945 the declaration of unconditional surrender had been signed in Berlin by the German general Alfred Jodl and that news was spread by the media over Europe on May 8th and 9th ~ communication means then were radio, newspaper and telling all around you the news you'd learned; then there was no instant means of spreading the news on Youtube or Twitter or e-mail and the world seemed larger than now.
