Blantyre Suburbs
Blantyre has a beautiful situation. It sits on top of an escarpment and is surrounded by hills. The height above sea level means that it has a more temperate climate than the lower plains - a fact that led David Livingstone to establish his mission headquarters there because it gave the missionaries a break from the rather brutal temperatures elsewhere in the country.
This view shows one of the hills that cradle the city and you can see how the suburbs are spreading up the side of the mountain. Everything is very green because they have had good rains this year which have just finished, so the grass and foliage is lush.
