Tree over track

The fir tree stands bowed over the cycle track on the moors north of Arnhem, Holland. The 30 cms / 1 foot of snow that was covering these moorlands five days ago has all but gone, except for some very treachers icy patches here and there. The roar from the motorway can be heard, some 2½ miles away, but otherwise there is deep silence. Forests alternate with heathlands across a large swathe of the province of Gelderland, an area referred to as the Veluwe. It was gouged out by glaciers in the last ice age, and the hills around the present day city of Arnhem were the moraines at the foot of the glacier.
