Strange Bird

A single Red-necked Phalarope out in the farmlands this evening. It's an odd species to find outside of saltwater (and by itself) so it was a nice treat to come across in my birdy wanderings. Phalaropes are fascinating sandpipers in that the roles of the sexes are reversed: the female is brighter, more aggressive, and competes for multiple mates, while the male is the sole incubator of the nest and raises the chicks as a single dad.
