Blantyre Mission

Today we said goodbye to our group of teachers and it was, as ever, an emotional experience. Because we finished with the group early to allow them travelling time, we were able to visit the main tourist site in Blantyre.
St. Michael and All Angels church was built by David Livingstone's missionaries on the site where he founded his original mission. This is a remarkable building - all the more so because the missionaries who built it did not have any skills or formal training in building design, planning of construction. They did, however, manage to erect a beautiful building- one which has been preserved by the Malawian government as a National Monument.
Nowadays it is not possible to go inside, although the site is carefully preserved and a very modern multi- purpose hall has been built just beside it. Today a graduation ceremony for nurses was being held there and the place was busy with groups of nurses and their families picnicking and taking photos.
