After the Cloudburst

The Weirs on the Sea Cut below the Burniston Road bridge at
Scalby, a few miles North of Scarborough, where the flood waters
are restrained on their onward surge eastwards to the sea at Scalby
Mills about half a mile distant. Above these Weirs and just below the
bridge are the scant remains of a Watermill known as Scalby Low Mill.
The mill owner's house was demolished in the mid 20th Cent. and the
wheel long before that. I have yet to see a picture of it. Traces of the mill
race to Scalby High Mill, about half a mile to the West, are still identifiable
and we are indeed very fortunate that the former Mill by the sea - Scalby Mills
- is still standing and is noted for its real ales and good food as well as
outstanding coastal scenery. One can imagine on a day like today the mill
owners at all three mills would have been kept very busy !
