A new friend
The smaller of the two twin calves was taken away from its mother and has been alone for two days. We struggled to feed it with a bottle or a bucket for the first day but to no avail and so it had to be tube fed again. On the second day it got the hang of sucking fingers in a bucket of warm milk and there was no turning back! He was cold and empty when we first moved him and so this little calf coat was put upon his back.
Today T bought a week old calf from a neighbouring dairy herd which had already been weaned off its mother to put with it for company. They will now remain separate from the suckler herd until they are about six months old.
This morning there was a large hare running through the buttercups in the paddock in front of the house. The same one no doubt that was racing along the back hedge of the garden yesterday. Spring is in the air!
