The First Day of the Year

For many years we had a New Year's tradition with our friends Scott & Peg -- we'd meet at the Coco's Restaurant at the top of "pancake hill" to have breakfast. The past several years we've missed that breakfast because currently their son & daughter-in-law live out of state and Scott & Peg often are with them between Christmas and New Years.

So this past Monday when Scott & Peg met us at the ocean, they told us their plans for New Year's weekend--to camp at San Clemente State Park and invited us to join them for dinner one of the evenings that they'd be there.

Over the years the 4 of us have shared lots of life's moments--good moments, tragic moments, fun moments, sad moments--together our memories would fill dozens of scrapbooks. One extremely fun moment happened as we all visited a costume shop when we traveled up the Ohio River during the summer of 2000. So I've inserted a picture of the snapshot of that crazy fun moment.

This afternoon the 2 of us drove 50 miles and arrived at their campsite at 4 o'clock. Peg had prepared delicous hors d'oeuvres and a sumptuosus evening meal complete with garden salad, pasta and garlic bread. We were pleasantly surprised to see a spectacular view of Catalina Island right from their campsite. In 1981 the 4 of us met and formed a lifetime friendship while spending a week at family camp on that island. This evening we ate our meal while watching the sunset--the sky lit-up with spectacular colors and the island's vivid profile was more pronounced with each passing moment.

After about 4 hours together Mr. Fun & Rosie headed for home thrilled that we had connected on New Year's Day with Scott & Peg and believing that this was the very best way to begin 2010.

We hope all of you have had a great New Year's celebration. Now this first day of the year is about finished and we still have Saturday and Sunday to celebrate. Good night from Southern California.
