Doha Days

The blipper blipped! *

We sat on the corniche drinking mint tea and watching the world set with the sun. On Friday, the day of prayer, I get the impression this is a weekly rehearsal for Ramadan. As the sun sets, so the fast ends, and everyone comes out to play. In Ramadan, beginning at the end of June, this weekly ritual becomes a daily one and will last for at least a month.

* Local custom discourages photographs like this. I was actually taking her picture, as she set her tripod towards the setting sun, and her anonymous silhouette reminded me of The French Lieutenant's Woman. She turned as I blipped and became the unintended subject of today's journal entry. Earlier we had been entertained splendidly by The Doha Players excellent matinee performance of Les Mis!
