Beautiful Demoiselle, immature male
Back door fixed this morning so needed to stay in.
Shortish out this afternoon, just around the top of the canal. Clouding over a little but still lots worth seeing. The yellow iris are in full flower, a brimstone streaks by and there are lots of whites mainly green veined but some orange tips. A superb immature male Beautiful Demoiselle lets me get so close as he basks in the sun not yet interested in claiming a territory. All seems very quiet until we see a pair of moorhens… and then we hear the chicks, three of them quite small black bundles of fluff still. Tits are calling - these are really noisy. It’s a troop of just fledged fluffy long-tailed tits, there must be 9 or 10. We follow them along for a while. It is difficult to get any shots as they are on the move all the time. I get a couple against the sky. Its only when I get home and look that I see one has caught an insect or spider. Walking back along the lane passing a pond and stream we come across another moorhen family with slightly older chicks. The umbellifers are well out along the path so pretty but also so deadly as I think this is a dropwort.
