Broadleys (Continued)

Yesterday I 'bliped' about the Broadley Brothers shop in the High Street. Whilst researching the history of the Prince of Wales I was looking at the 1911 Census for Lingfield Road and spotted that George Herbert Broadley lived in Lonsdale House, Lingfield Road (pictured).

George, aged 41 is shown as a 'Merchant Tailor' living with his wife Elsie Gertrude (36) and their sons Thomas (11) and George (9) and daughters Margaret (7) and Nora (6 months). Also in the household was 22 year old Nellie (Domestic Servant).

Its possible to locate the house as the ones on either side (from the census) still carry their 1911 names (possibly because they're carved into the stone work). Today its name is 'Broomlea'. I first knew the house in the early 1970 when John Simpson and his family lived there.

The 1901 Census shows the family living in 'Fairmead' in Lewes Road. George's occupation is given as Shopkeeper, Tailor and Outfitter.
