Is it a broken piece of dead wood...?

No...it's a moth! This is one of a number of moths I recorded for the first time from my light trap in the garden last night - Pale Prominent, Pterostroma palpina. It is so incredibly not moth-like when it's playing dead like this. What a brilliant camouflage! I'm really enjoying moth-trapping - it took me over 2 hours poring over books to identify the catch this morning...but well worth it.
