Que sera.........
This parenting thing gets really tricky!
I used to think keeping the kids safe and whole in one piece physically was a full-time job and hard work....get down from that tree, don't climb too high, look before you cross the road...... I still do my fair share of those instructions with our youngest son.
I am finding equal or greater challenge in ensuring the emotional well-being of our kids as they grow. How do we give them the resilience and life skills to cope when things go wrong?
Our daughter had a really tough chem exam yesterday. She was quite distressed (on the other side of the world), and my hurt breaks for her. How do we find the right path between sympathy, empathy and encouragement. It seems insensitive to say "its just an exam, an important exam, yes, but just one of 15 other exams".
I have a dear friend and she talks in disaster scales........ you know how it goes.....if stubbing your toe is a one on the disaster scale being diagnosed with a terrible illness or losing a loved one is up there at 10!
I struggled to find the right balance between trying to bolster her up for the other exams she still has to face this week .......find the strength and move on babe ......and allowing her a moment to grieve the fact that she bombed on one.
In the end, after lots of chatting, consoling & empathising, I sent her a clip for the Australian band Justice Crew singing Que Sera.... and asked her to play it REALLY loud before she went in for her next chem exam today!!!!!
"Que Sera"
At the end of the day
Some you win, some you don’t
So I’m glad that I’m here
With some friends that I know
Always there with a smile
Saying you’re not alone
Singing la la la la
Que sera
(Here we go, yo)
Yesterday is history (oh)
You gotta get through it
Tomorrow is a mystery
So let’s just do it
And even when the rain falls
You and I will stand tall
No matter what you go through
I’ll never leave you
So you gotta be strong (strong)
Live by the words of the song (song)
Together is where we belong (long)
Never stop dreaming
Keep holding on
At the end of the day
Some you win, some you don’t
So I’m glad that I’m here
With some friends that I know
Always there with a smile
Saying you’re not alone
Singing la la la la
Que sera
When it’s been a long day
Had enough, given up, it ain’t okay
We don’t care what the world say
We spread love it’s the only way
So you gotta be strong (strong)
Live by the words of the song (song)
Together is where we belong (long)
Never stop dreaming
Keep holding on
We keep falling, but the world keeps spinning
And I might stop winning, just as long as I got you by my side
We keep falling, but the world keeps spinning
And I might stop winning, but I know that we’re gonna be alright
At the end of the day
Some you win, some you don’t
So I’m glad that I’m here
With some friends that I know
Always there with a smile
Saying you’re not alone
Singing la la la la
Que sera
