Organ, Bury St Edmunds Cathedral
The weather was truly foul today, especially in the afternoon when we had torrential rain and we got very wet!
However, it was tolerable for most of the time and we went round the shops and into the Cathedral when the rain got worse. The Cathedral here has been one since 1914 and the former church of St James was elevated to Cathedral status when the Diocese of St Edmundsbury was created 100 years ago. Since then, the building has been enlarged. First in 1960, then 1970 when the Choir was enlarged and the tower in 2005. The organ seen in the picture was completed in 2010. This Cathedral is one of my most favourite churches. It's extremely welcoming, and it has been so carefully and imaginatively added to that it is outstanding in its colour and decoration. This was the work of the brilliant architect Stephen Dykes Bower who designed the additions in a medieval style that complement the 16th Century nave. The tower is modelled on those of Somerset and is very impressive. It also adds light into the centre of the building. Well worth a visit, and I have been here a good number of times, you are always assured of an enjoyable and memorable visit.
