Locked away in the city centre

Canal towpaths provide useful and peaceful shortcuts for getting round the city centre, and provide a constant reminder of how canals in cities like Manchester and Birmingham were fundamental to the Industrial Revolution. Pity about the graffiti, but I'm actually getting used to it and beginning to accept it as part of the urban landscape. This is a lock on the Birmingham canal, one of many canal lines meeting at the Gas Street Basin.
