Horticultural Therapy
Sue and I are visiting two very dear friends in Fresno. Both are Unitarian Universalist ministers, and one works as a volunteer in a program for young adults with developmental disabilities. The program, run by this splendid woman, offers students the opportunity to learn horticultural skills and to interact with nature in ways that give many of them pleasure as they gain skills that could lead eventually to greater independence and will at least widen their options. Most participants say the program increases their appreciation for gardens and gardening, and I think basking in the light of this lovely woman's energy is no doubt good for them as well.
I neglected to ask her permission to post the picture, so I won't mention her name, but her delight in her job and the beauty of this day are apparent in the photograph.
