Neptune's Staircase
This is the first major feature of the Caledonian Canal. The canal rises from just above see level towards the level of Loch Lochy. A staircase of 8 locks facilitates that rise. 22 boats and 3 rescue boats cram into the locks, 3 abreast. Lots of fenders and ropes, hands and legs hold the boats away from the lock sides and each other. The water boils and surges as the water flood the locks. At first there is uncertainty, nervousness. But as we climb up the system of locks, we get the hang of it, make friends, build trust and we start to gel. The people are as eclectic as the boats, but share a passion for sailing small boats. It restores your faith in human nature.
