Last birds

The last day of ringing on Antikythera and we had drawn the 4:45 am short straw to open the nets. Early morning blues were however quickly dispelled when we caught two Scops Owls on the first round - this is one of them.
Again a migrant that spends the Winter in Africa, this owl has a very distinctive monotonic call- as long as you can work out it isn't a burglar alarm or a Midwife Toad. This Youtube clip gives you a flavour of it.
Again not a bird of bright colours but a real subtlety of cryptic plumage with eyes to die for. It struck me as having a disdainful half-asleep "What on earth do you think you are doing?" look to him or her. He or she was probably quite right to do so!
