Northside Elementary

In August 2013, Northside Elementary School opened its doors for the first time. Seventy-four years ago, Dolores Clark, now 79, attended elementary school on that same site. Back then, it was known as the Orange County Training School, an African American school in a racially segregated school system. Now Clark's granddaughter attends Northside Elementary, a state-of-the-art facility with a racially diverse student population. "Our black children get a better education," Clark said of the new school and the changes in the education system. Clark has been a crossing guard for 10 years, starting when she retired from her job as a pediatric nurse. "I love it," Clark said of her job. She enjoys driving her grandaughter to school and back every day.
