Samson and Goliath
Samson and Goliath are the names of two shipbuilding gantry cranes that dominate the Belfast skyline. Both built by the German firm Krupp, Goliath (96 metres tall) was completed in 1969 and Goliath (106 metres) in 1974, when Harland & Wolff was one of the largest shipbuilders in the world. Work has dropped off since then, but at present they seem to be involved in work on an oil rig (which gives some perspective on their size). Together the two cranes can raise more than 1,600 tonnes to a height of 70 metres, one of the largest lifting capacities in the world, and the dry dock at the base of the cranes is the largest in the world (measuring 556 m × 93 m).
