White clover

Trifolium repens. There are a number of patches of white clover spreading across the roadway to the side of the chapel at the top of the lane. The bumblebees were enjoying them this evening - can you spot one?

White clover is one of the most important forage legumes in the UK, providing protein for grazing livestock. It also fixes nitrogen in the soil, reducing the need for artificial fertiliser. Farmers will often add it to the mix when reseeding fields.

Both red and white clover are an important source of nectar and pollen for bees. Clover honey is delicious!
