Cape Town coloured and white

…Jermyn Street Theatre, St James

‘District 6 Our Buckingham Palace’ is a gentle, funny and affectionate play co-written and performed by Basil Appollis. He delivers a monologue about the life of South African writer Richard Rive (1931 to 1989) and his life in District 6, an area of Cape Town for coloureds. The menace and madness of apartheid simmers throughout and occasionally bolls over. At one point, his brother tells him that if Richard hadn’t been born black, the family could be living in a white area.

It is part of a South African Season of plays which runs until 12th July.
