Scarborough Spa
As seen in the early morning today and as seen in
the evening some 135 years ago. The Castle Headland
and sky are little changed but on a summer evening in
1879 this was the Spa in Francis Sydney Muschamp's
painting. It was a place for the gathering of the great and
good to parade in grand style. The scene was painted by
Muschamp shortly after the Spa was re-opened after
a fire three years earlier. It has retained its appeal today
as a Grade 11 * Listed Building of the highest historical
significance being the place where the British seaside
holiday began in the 17th Cent.
