22. Hancock
Today I visited the Riley graves, which are just down the road from where we’ve been staying on holiday. They mark the site where the Hancock family were buried back in 1666 when the plague came to the village of Eyam. Amazingly the village locked themselves in to prevent the spread of the disease further north. The ultimate sacrifice. The Hancock family was a particularly tragic case where Mrs. Hancock lost 6 of her children and her husband to the plague in just over a week. She buried them all herself. Absolutely tragic. |||
