First Lily.......

..........opened this morning - they were all re-sited earlier this year and I'm not too sure they liked it! - However, they are all growing but have fewer buds than in previous years. Perhaps a good feed is indicated!

BOUI for today:-

1) The Lily was a symbol of nobility. Lily is an emblem of summer and abundance according to the Chinese and was the holy flower of the ancient Assyrians. In medieval times, white lilies were often used for medical treatments. Modern science, has proven these lily remedies to be only myths.

2) To the ancient Egyptians, the trumpet-shaped lily was a symbol of Upper Egypt, the southern part of the country. In the ancient Near East, the lily was associated with Ishtar, also known as Astarte, who was a goddess of creation and fertility as well as a virgin. The Greeks and Romans linked the lily with the queen of the gods, called Hera by the Greeks and Juno by the Romans. The lily was also one of the symbols of the Roman goddess Venus.

3) The lily has no true medicinal value although at one time it was thought to possess certain medicinal virtues. It was thought to have magical properties and there were thousands of recipes in Elizabethan times for the use of lilies in the treatment of fever or as a unguent containing lily root for cleaning wounds, burns and sores. as well as relieving rheumatic and arthritic symptoms.

4) Eudoxia Orienpet Lily was a popular flower in ancient Jewish civilization. It is mentioned in the Bible several times. It was named after Aelia Eudoxia who was the powerful, strong willed and influential wife of the Roman Emperor Arcadius. From 401 to 403 AD shows her diadem draped bust with the "Hand of God" holding a wreath over her head.

5) Lilies are dedicated to maiden Goddesses generally, especially Diana. A symbol of Purity.
