White-breasted Nuthatch close to home
Late this afternoon I looked out my bathroom window and caught a glimpse of unusual small birds nearby. They turned our to be white-breasted nuthatches (Sitta carolinensis); three of them stayed around, clearly a group, probably a family (it was unusual behavior for them). I had time to get out with my big lens, but with their rapid movement this was the only halfway decent shot I managed.
Afterwards we watched the United States play Ghana for their first match in the World Cup--the U.S. scored in the first minute and the 86th (or so), after Ghana had evened it near the end. Yippee! The U.S. had lost to Ghana in the first round of the two previous World Cups, so this was sweet revenge. And it opens the possibility of advancing to the round of 16 despite their very t0ugh group (Germany ran away from Portugal in the other group game today)>
