qui dat pauperi non indigebit
I work in Croydon, once a quiet country town, but since the mid 19th centuary part of South London. These Almshouses, a stones-throw from my office, were built by John Whitgift, Archbishop of Canterbury in 1596. They exist on the corner of a modern pedestrianised High Street, cheek by jowl with the department stores, banks and building societies. I don't think the lovely enclosed courtyard garden that you can just see through the iron gates in the archway is accessible to the public. But it is enjoyed by the elderley residents who are still provided for by the trust set up by the Archbishop more than 400 years ago.
