Scott Tower on Corstorphine Hill, Edinburgh
A beautiful sunny and warm day. In Edinburgh to see my daughter and our son-in-law, who is recovering from an emergency back operation. Thankfully, he is so much better than before the operation, though it will take some time yet before he will be fully fit.
In the afternoon, we took a stroll up Costorphine Hill and found the Tower, which was erected in 1871 by William Macfie of Clermiston and is dedicated to Sir Walter Scott.
The tower is square in plan, with buttressed corners; it has a battlemented parapet surmounted by a small tower. It is built of coursed whinstone, likely to be from quarries on the hill, with dressed sandstone for the openings, parapets and plaques, probably from one of the large Edinburgh sandstone quarries.
We then went and visited the nearby Walled Garden, which is rather a hidden gem.It was lovely and peaceful and had many wild flowers. If you would like to see some photos from the Garden, see my Flikr set.
Have a good Sunday, whatever you are doing.
