To Traverse the Sowerby Bridge Deep Lock

It is reported that this canal lock is the deepest on the British canal system.

One is not allowed to operate this lock alone. There is a lock master in charge of it called Billy. We saw him twice today as went up the lock in the morning and returned in the evening after an attempt to visit Hebden Bridge.

Here you see a canal boat entering the lock on its ascent. We had to wait for it to complete its passage before we could descend in our boat. That way the minimum amount of water is wasted.

We were thoroughly entertained by the stories told by Billy whilst waiting for the water to rise...
