Ranting with friends

Today I had to put my son to bed in tears, apologising to me because there was "no point" in my coming to watch his sports day tomorrow afternoon because he "isn't good enough" to take part in a single race.

Just to be clear, I'm all for competitive sports days. I think children need to learn how to win and lose gracefully. The kids who are good at sports should be recognised for being good, and all kids should learn that it's the taking part that counts. But to be told that they are not even good enough to take part, just isn't acceptable.

Tonight I am very glad for like-minded friends (both in person and on t'interweb). I am also very glad for vodka.

Tomorrow I shall give 'em hell
