Little Sprouts of Special milkweed
We have had two nights of lightening and thunder storms.
I heard long ago that lightening causes the roots of plants, grass, trees, etc. to grow. Ot helps create ozone, or both.
Well, here is proof. This plastic container with seed starting medium has had ascelepsis or milkweed seeds planted a several days ago sitting in the bathroom. They have until October to go into the garden according to the seed packet (shown). Suddenly over half of the little guys are up and waving in the sky... they enjoyed two nights of serious lightening... we did not!
Once they get their 2nd leaves out into the garden with them. Next year they will bloom with enticing orange flowers as bee and monarch butterfly food.
The monarch is losing its migration food of milkweed especially in the middle of the US due to agricultural practices that use Roundup and other herbicides to get rid of "weeds."
The reports claim that the butterflies do not have enough food to make it south of the border for the winter hibernation. They only eat and lay eggs upon the various milkweeds. I am doing my part and hope. I have saved seeds from different types to plant more in a few ditches that are not mowed.
Years ago around here the broad cutting of road verges was at about 12 inches. Then longer blades came along and the cut can be as much as 48 inches. No chance for necessary wildflowers for the butterflies.
I have a few plants of two other types of tall milkweed in the flower garden and bog. Doing my part...
