KINGFISHER 9

I chose this shot today ( a very fine day indeed ) because it highlights something quite remarkable about the kingfisher. looking at its eye one can see what looks like a heavy dose of a cataract( which davidC will know plenty about) but it in fact is a membrane which comes over the eyes as they catch and destroy their prey. Its a protection mechanism to stop damage to the eye. They seem to be able to on/off it when ever they need. Here the bird is doing its 'whack whack' of the food on the perch to knock the limbs from the crab. (Not much sustainance in them) So to prevent any flying limbs damaging the eye it
brings the membrane across for protection. Wonderful birds !
