The Giving Garden
Cold, wet day. We attended a BBQ at lunchtime which was given as a 'Thank You' to all the helpers involved in the Dundee Food Banks. In true Scottish fashion, we ate indoors in the Menzieshill Church Hall, where the event was held. As we shared with other people it became clear that the work of the Food Banks will continue to be needed for some time to come.
After we had eaten, Eleanor and I had a visit to the Menzieshill 'Giving Garden' Project run by the Church. The leader of the Group, Dave, showed us round and explained how it worked. It started in 2011 and it was now reaching its full potential. A couple of Schools are involved as are other Community groups. Each one looks after a plot, growing mainly root vegetables. All the produce is given to the Food Bank, mainly to make up Soup Bags i.e. some vegetables and stock for the recipients to make their own soup. Many hundreds of these bags are given out in the course of a year.
Eleanor is particularly interested since we have an area of spare ground at our Church that she has her eye on for a similar, though smaller, Project.
We are thankful that we have enough food to eat - and grateful too, that we are part of the churches in Dundee who seek to help those less fortunate than we are.
Enjoy the rest of the weekend.
