Dads and Lads

The moment Tom has been waiting for all year.
The highlight of his Junior School life
The real reason he's put the time in at the nets, slogged to Sunday training and spent hours in the park fielding catches.
That moment arrived today; drumroll please ...
The Dads v Lads First XIIII Cricket Match.

The dads went into bat first. Each dad faced his own son's bowling for one eight-ball over. The dads whacked the boys around the field, but the boys held their own and there were two spectacular catches; one from Bobby in mid-field and one from our own Tommo on the boundary.

If thunder and lightning hadn't stopped play halfway through the second innings who knows what would have happened. We'll never know the outcome, but we'll never care. The sun, the cider, the company, the camaraderie of the dads, the quality of the cricket, the bittersweet feeling of watching the school year draw to a close and our boys leave their Junior School days of play behind them .. and the sheer joy at watching my lad and his dad, and our friends' lads and their dads, meant today was A Perfect Day.
