What's In A Street Name 8 - Hollingbourne Crescent
On the way back from shopping in Crawley and in the pouring rain, I photographed this road nameplate in the Crawley Neighbourhood of Broadfield.
This particular part of Broadfield has roads named after places in Surrey and Kent that are either on or under the North Downs.
The North Downs are a range of chalk hills in SE England that in the W begin at Farnham and end in the E at the famous White Cliffs of Dover. Hollingbourne lies at the foot of the North Downs on the the scarp or steepest side of the hills. It is a large village that lies between Maidstone and Ashford. It is aslo on four main transport routes - the A20, the M20, the railway from Maidstone to Ashford and what is often called HS1 - the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. Despite all this, the area remains rural and the village has a lot of old timber framed houses in it. The famous Leeds Castle is also very close by.
