If you can't beat them...

Bassenthwaite Lake.

The only lake in the whole of the Lake District! The rest are Waters or Meres.

I had reason to be over near Lorton for most of the day, soon my way back I took the time to detour slightly towards Ouse Bridge. There a re a couple of little car parks leading to a stretch of the lake shore which provided my family with many happy hours as I was growing up.

Not the best of weather but pleasant enough. The view across the lake shows Skiddaw (the largest mountain in the background) The Dodd (the conical hill in the middle distance) where you can view the nesting Ospreys, and the other conical peak is Latrigg beside Keswick.

If you have to spend the day indoors having scenery like this on the way and the fells above Lorton out of the window make it bearable :-)
