Hoverfly (Episyrphus balteatus)
Sunning itself on some bramble flowers this afternoon after some sharp storms had passed.
This is probably the commonest and best known of the hoverflies, partly because it is a frequent visitor to parks and gardens as well as more natural habitats. The adults are very mobile and migratory and can appear in vast swarms in some years. The larvae are voracious aphid-feeders and the adults may be found almost anywhere that there are flowers for nectar.
