Sherborne Abbey
Just a quickie today. N and I drove over to Sherborne to collect a re- upholstered chair and some medication from the vets for New Forest Eye. Some of the cattle have it and have to be treated right away. They have been in a field near the wood and the flies spread this infection.
Sherborne Abbey was founded in 705 by the Abbot of Malmesbury. He was canonised and known as St Aldhelm (meaning "old helmet" in Anglo Saxon!). There are still some remains of the old Saxon abbey church which can be seen in the building today. Two Saxon kings are buried here and one of their tombs is open in the floor for all to see. They were the two elder brothers of King Alfred the Great: King Aethelbald and King Ethelbert both of Wessex. In more " recent" times Sir Walter Raleigh used to worship here.
Mowed the lawn. Another old farming neighbour in hospital who doesn't sound too good. So sad. T started work at 4.30 am this morning so was pretty tired by the time N and I arrived home this afternoon.
Nearly forgot! There was a slow worm in the garden in the vicinity of the grass snakes this afternoon. The slow worm is from the lizard family and is not a snake.
