Dangly bits

We don't think of grasses as being 'flowering' plants, but like their cousins with brightly coloured petals they still have to get the male pollen to the female stigma in order to reproduce.

The thing about grasses is that they depend on the wind for pollination - carrying that lovely genetic material away to another grass plant. This means they have to dangle their anthers out of the 'flower' so the wind can catch and carry away the small, light pollen grains.

And here they are! Little anthers dangling in the wind. Glad I don't suffer from hayfever. Much.
