Softball Finger
Chris took Betsy to Softball, and Al and I pottered around together, homework, walking the dog, reading.
Chris had told me via text that Betsy had hurt her finger at training but thought it was OK. He took her from Softball straight to her drama rehearsal. When she got back at about 3.30 she was tearful and showed me her finger. It was swollen and a bit bent and the nail was going a bit black at the bottom. The day before, Betsy had been wearing blue nail polish which she hadn't taken off very well so we weren't sure if it was really bruised or not as all her nails looked a bit blue!
Anyway, it was definitely bent so I took her to A&E. They said that the tendon is damaged and have given her a splint to wear. They X-Rayed it as they thought the bone might be chipped but the pictures weren't very good and though they can't be sure if it is chipped or not the nurse said she thought it unlikely not least because Betsy would be in a lot more pain if it was.
The injury is called 'Mallet Finger' but in the US they call it 'Baseball Finger'. We think that's pretty cool if a bit sexist and are calling it 'Softball Finger' from now on.
I have to take her back to the fracture clinic on Wednesday but the nurse said even if it is chipped she will be OK to play in Italy, and that is all she cares about.
Sadly, being at the hospital for three hours meant that we missed my brother-in-law's ballet performance. It will be available on DVD so we will have to make do with that.
