Houghton hovel
We've been nosing around various local villages today! We went back to Houghton as the village looked really interesting when we drove through it yesterday to get to the mill. It was worth the trip! There were loads of old buildings, including this amazing one with an ancient chimney that's almost falling down. It must be 14th-century or so, exceptionally old.
After Houghton we looked round Hemingford Grays. We were trying to get to an amazing 12th-century house that was open there, but it was privately owned and they only did one tour a day, and we missed it. But it didn't matter! It turned out to be another lovely historic village with a very peaceful atmosphere, so we enjoyed looking round it. We've been in no less than three old churches so far on this holiday, this has to be some sort of record, the speed that we're racking them up...
We thought about going somewhere else but it started to get stormy and very busy (apparently rush hour is an hour earlier up here than down south!). So we decided to head back to Eaton Socon for dinner! We liked the roast that we had yesterday so much that we decided to try their normal menu as well. We weren't disappointed, and we even met a local couple who gave us tips on places to visit. People are much more social around here in general than where we live in the south east we've noticed!
Unfortunately the weather is looking very unstable for the rest of the week, we're just going to have to see how it goes!
